Dans les temps (In times)

A creation by Elodie Garonne, Candie Alet, and Benoît Espinola

Dans les temps (In times) comes from a workshop set up by the teachers at the Fine Art School in Aix-en-Provence and the artist, Rémi Dall’aglio. The theme given to the students, then in their second year, was “Art and Science”. Benoît Espinola, Elodie Garonne and Candie Alet chose to explore “Time”. With a month before them (two weeks of reflection and two weeks to produce the work), they created this installation in collaboration with two other students (Amandine Le Bihan and Lionel Montenot). Later, an exhibition of the work was proposed at the Town Hall of Aix-en-Provence. The objective ? Materialise time, show how it can be distorted, its visual and audio disparity, in brief accentuate the perception of a notion that is both common to yet different for each of us (who has never said : “This hour has just flown by !”). From where the decision to disrupt a metronome – an object measuring not only time, but also setting a rhythm – enclosed within in its enlarged reincarnation, as an illusion, a metaphor of alterable time. Through a spyhole, the spectator can see the tiny metronome function, but he cannot hear it. Except though a microphone, also visible. Nevertheless, the sound that it permeates via the loudspeaker integrated into the installation does not correspond to the movement (directly modified by a programme which puts the sound rendered out of step). Thus time becomes elastic : its perception, broken up. And thus the spectator – listener finds himself projected no longer in time but into times.

Le pavillon à 7 brèches

A creation by Marine Class and Sara Domenach

Sara Domenach is a painter ; Marine Class, a sculptor. The artists met during their studies at the Fine Arts School in Paris and rapidly found correlations in their work : volume and its pictorial representation through aspects associated with vegetation. Their work together explores the potentials of space and develops the capacity to rebuild it as an environmental entity. The first collaboration in March 2008 produced an installation : Mise en Bouche (Tasting). Since then they have persevered in the development of their complementary skills. Last November, Tapis volant et Farioboules (Flying carpet and nonsense) came to light. Today they are finalising the model for their future installation that they will show in September 2009 : Le Pavillon à 7 brèches (The pavilion with 7 breaches). This work will mark the between the real and the magic by drawing from the intra-extra contrast between the substrate and its structure. The representation of a space, enclosed by definition, a pavilion, will be open to free circulation of air with its seven apertures, a reference to the mythology of Skopje ; paintings of plants will work their way into the interior and an overflowing sculpture will burst out of the ceiling. The unique imaginary plants will here act as a filter whereas the central sculpture appears as a growth from the roof developing towards the interior.

A creation by Tomek Jarolim

From his computer studies at the IUT, Tomek Jarolim has preserved his taste for programmes and codes, that inflexible and objective computer grammar which, via the computer tool, gives no room for randomness. Until we come to Invisibles. That is, two LCD screens « hung on the wall, like two paintings » linked to two computers controlled by two programmes. Use the latter, he asks the machine to show through a loop, (a reference to human behaviour, which, when it cannot do something, tries to find another way) to show in red, green and blue on one screen (that is RGB, the three basic layers in digital imagery) which should theoretically produce white. And on the other, black and white, which it the mixture of all (in digital imagery, white is the maximum value) and void (when no pixels hit the screen). The result ? The machine is incapable of executing these so simple operations. And rapidly saturates. Thus there is a bug (in reference to the human bug, retinal persistance). On one side, the white is never completely white ; on the other, it is never really void nor completely full. And it is perhaps exactly this in-between, which is the beginning of subjectivity ; arising in a machine considered moreover as infallible. Which instead of remaining a tool, begins to create the light that attracts the spectator’s eye : then the interaction can start.

Passage à l’infini

A creation by Marjorie Brunet

Passage à l’infini (Passage to the infinite) : two diptychs inspired by L’art de rêver (The art of dreaming) by Carlos Castaneda. But not necessarily of the work itself, rather by their author’s approach. He used words, Marjorie Brunet, photos. Because as she says, photography is after all just a medium. And hers, moreover, is extremely close to painting, particularly the classical : the work with light, the taste for chiaroscuro, the feeling for detail, the importance of the composition. What begins here as a diptych, a sort of face to face with oneself, built around notions implying not only a passing from one to the other but also an interdependance : life / death, consciousness / unconsciousness, outside / inside. « A journey inwards...unfinished, of course » its author says. Yet all the same, a few elements, beginning with that in which the models are plunged : water. Inspired by the work of Michel Redolfi and that of the video artist, Bill Viola (which was a true trigger for her) around this element, she develops as this passage, the revealer where the models show something which does not belong to them (no longer?). And if the surface of the water – the frontier ? - is still visible, the verticality of the portraits refers here to spirituality, to the question of the soul ; or further hides the reasons possible. Until it renders this passage to the infinite impossible ? For you to decide...
